Miley Cyrus’ criticism of Rick Santorum’s opposition to gay marriage has been named one of the top celebrity politics moments of 2011.

Referring to Santorum’s 2003 remarks in which he likened gay unions to “man on dog,” the 19-year-old Cyrus tweeted to her more than 1 million followers in May that Urban Outfitters had donated to Santorum’s previous campaigns. “’IF WE ALLOW GAY MARRIAGE NEXT THING U KNOW PEOPLE WILL BE MARRYING GOLD FISH’ – Rick Santorum UO contributed $13,000 to this mans campaign.”
When messaged back, “@MileyCyrus what happened to that Christian girl from TN with descent moral values and a lot of heart?” the teen pop sensation responded, “what an ignorant statement. I don’t have ‘alot of heart’ cuz im not gonna be a closed minded hypocrite? LOVE IS LOVE. GOD IS LOVE.”
During an appearance on the Chris Stigall Show, the former Pennsylvania senator feigned concern over Cyrus’ opinion: “When she came out against me, we actually had a family meeting and decided whether I can continue on in this process and, you know, we had to talk to the kids and it was difficult. But we’re actually holding out — we still think we might get Lindsay Lohan. And with that, you know, we can continue. We’re waiting.”
