- JoJo’s spent a good chunk of the year trying to convince us that she’s all grown up and ready to return to the industry with a hot new look and a more adult sound; she’s sung about sex on her Drake cover “Marvin’s Room”, cussed up a storm “The Other Chick”, released a steamy mixtape, and even taken a page out of Britney’s book by wearing midriff tops out and about.
But that’s not exactly going to work on the charts for somebody who made their name with hits like “Leave (Get Out)” –just look at the sudden cancellation of “The Other Chick”– so JoJo’s now treading more familiar territory with her first real official comeback single “Disaster”.
“Disaster” sounds a lot like the older brother of “Leave” and “Too Little Too Late”. It’s radio-friendly and angsty, but noticeably more mature, with an angry, bitter edge that reflects the confusion any 20-year-old feels when their first real relationship goes wrong. There’s a lot of Jordin Sparks present, most notably “Battlefield” and “Let It Rain”, but it sounds better coming from JoJo thanks to her short-but-impressive track record on the subject.
“Disaster” is a little dated, but radio are always looking for non-clubby tunes (think Bruno Mars) to play on air to balance out the influx of dance music, so there’s a chance that this could get picked up. Well, that is unless Kelly Clarkson’s “Mr. Know It All” doesn’t cockblock it first.
Its such a great song, and even a great video.
Looks like a really nice setting also
